Alan's opinion:
"HOW MUCH IS A HUMAN LIFE WORTH?"
Ever watch the movie by Michael Moore entitled "Sicko"? If not, you should definitely make plans to do so! It is a documentary about the status of the U.S. healthcare system. You may be a conservative, liberal or any other political persuasion–it does not really matter. Your personal thoughts about Michael Moore are also really irrelevant. The movie, although personally slanted from Michael Moore’s viewpoint, has some very important thoughts for us all to consider especially in light of the ongoing debate in this country regarding the need for universal healthcare. You will witness the debate in the upcoming Presidential campaign.
Universal healthcare is really only a question as to whether you believe that all citizens should be entitled to appropriate healthcare services regardless of the individual’s economic status? There is no other question as to if you support it. It is that simple. Then the only remaining question is how to we as a country implement the program to insure that all have equal access. There are those for universal healthcare and those against it. Let me make a guess that those against it will be those who already have adequate healthcare insurance. If you are one of those who believe that I have it so who cares about those who do not, then just imagine a sudden change in circumstances where you suddenly lose your health insurance. Would you then have a change in opinion?
Our current medical system is a major multi-billion dollar for-profit business. There is constant conflict between insurance companies, health maintenance organizations and medical providers and those in need of medical care. And let us not forget the drug companies, who need to make a profit in the manufacture and sale of prescription medicines. If you cannot afford the cost then you just do not get the medicine you need for your illness. It is amazing that the same drugs manufcatured in the same place cost so much more here than in Canada and other countries!
A few weeks ago, the problem with health care in our nation was illustrated by a very unfortunate example. Natalee Sarkisian, who was 17 years old, died in a California hospital after a long battle with leukemia. She needed a liver transplant which her physicians had determined could save her life. However, she never got the transplant. The ironic part of the story is that she was not one of the millions of Americans without health insurance. Natalee in fact was insured by Cigna Health Care Insurance. Unfortunately CIGNA had denied coverage for the transplant claiming it fell into the category of experimental surgery. After hundreds of protestors demonstrated outside CIGNA headquarters, the company reversed its position and declared that it had decided to cover the liver transplant. Unfortunately for Natalee it was too late and she died! A young 17 year old girl is now dead because her life depended on whether or not she could afford to pay the cost of necessary health care.
Ever wonder how much a human life is worth? Ever wonder why there is so much opposition to universal healthcare in this nation? Ever wonder how you would feel if suddenly you lost your healthcare coverage? It is a national disgrace for any American to die or suffer because they cannot afford appropriate healthcare. Access to healthcare should never be based on your economic status. It should be a right of every citizen. Maybe we should quit debating the issue and do something about it! Enough is enough! Just remember that you too could find yourself in the same position as poor Natalee Sarkisan one day.
Just my thoughts for you to simply think about this week!
Kevin's opinion:
FISA..what is that?
The majority of Americans have no clue what "FISA" is all about. Well, it is clearly a law that Americans should get acquainted with if they can steal time away from shopping at the local mall. FISA is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. It is a federal law prescribing procedures for the physical and electronic and collection of "foreign intelligence information" between or among foreign powers" on territory under United States control. The act created a court which meets in secret, and approves or denies requests for search warrants. Only the number of warrants applied for, issued and denied, is reported. During the first year the court approved 322 warrants. This number has steadily grown to 2224 warrants in 2006. Only 5 warrants have been rejected since the court first met in 1979. The Act was amended by the Patriot Act of 2001, primarily to include terrorism on behalf of groups that are not specifically backed by a foreign government. Another overhaul occured when the Protect America Act of 2001 was signed into law.
All of these laws grew out of the attacks of "9/11". The war on terrorism has given rise to these laws which trek very close to stepping on some of our highly valued civil rights. Now, I am not a card carrying member of the ACLU, so just calm down some. But all Americans should be concerned enough to understand the nature of these laws and what authorities they grant to law enforcement agencies like the FBI.
Following the recent declassification of the "Hoover 1200 Arrest" document, Americans should be very scared. The former FBI chief once drew up a list containing 12,000 Americans whom were suspected of being potential subversives against the United States Government. Thankfully, the president of the United States never saw fit to implement the proposal but it would have allowed the FBI to move throughout the country arresting Americans and detaining them without giving them the right to petition the courts regarding their arrests. Now, if that does not scare you, maybe you should just go to the mall and do some shopping.
The FISA is a national security protection device but could become the ugly duckling if placed in the wrong hands. Laws are made by man and these same laws can be abused. Yes, Americans want protection, however, we need to be very cautious about the laws that we create. Those same laws could someday reach into the security of your own home and rip a love one out, perhaps never to be seen again.
PS...believe it or not, telephone companies have cut off certain FBI wiretaps around the country because the FBI field office supervisors likely forgot to pay their bills. Funny how that works; just like you and me, if we don't pay, they shut off our phones too! If the FBI cannot remember to pay their phone bills each month, how effective are they in conducting FISA requirements? A Justice Department audit blamed the lost phone connections on the FBI's laxness in quality control of the funding they use in undercover operations. In one specific office, the unpaid costs for wiretaps from one phone company totaled an estimated $66,000. Amazing stuff; how incompetent does it get! Hoover would be spinning in his grave. Just something we need to think about in earnest!
Kevin opinion:
Well, the Iowa cacuses vote is in! Who won and who lost? The better question would be ...did America win or lose? On the Democrat side, clearly Obama surged ahead of the pack and is now the person to beat. He sprang out of the opening gate as though he was a veteran of these political blood-lettings. His campaign strategy is to woo Americans to the reality that a "fresh face" is the ultimate answer and that we do not need business as usual in Washington. The "business as usual" candidates he indirectly speaks about are Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. Both Clinton and Edwards were disappointed with their showings and must rebound as their campaigns move into snowy New Hampshire this week. Especially for Edwards, another second or third place finish could quickly dry up potential fund raising efforts and make him only a candidate for a vice presidential spot. Mrs. Clinton can finish second in New Hampshire and march into the south for super Tuesday based upon her war chest alone. It would be very unlikely for her to consider taking a backseat to Obama on the ticket. The Republicans also have a clear front runner coming out of Iowa --former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. As unlikely as that appears, he clearly thrashed the Romney war wagon in Iowa. It appears that the Huckabee supporters were able to find more cars and babysitters to provide to their voters. Romney must do much better in New Hampshire or he is in deep trouble. As the former governor of the neighboring state, this is his backyard and failure here sends a clear ringtone to his future. Romney is the "Ken" doll from the toy set of Barbie and Ken. He is just a little too perfect and does really have a strong tendancy to tell lots of fish tales ("...I saw my father march with Martin Luther King..."). This guy is a phony and "flip-flops" on issues just to attract votes. Morman or not, these are highly questionable qualities for a presidential candidate. Also, it is so nice to see his adult sons helping along the campaign trail but it would be nicer to see them fighting in Iraq for a war that their dad believes so much in. All Americans need to pay close attention to these candidates in the months to come. P.S. > It is a real shame that a viable candidate like Ron Paul cannot have his voice heard during this time of national debate; maybe not electable but clearly a voice that should be heard! Unfortunately, he is not part of the party establishment.

IN ALAN'S OPINION....
"THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS?"
The old slogan that the "end never justifies the means" is definitely live and well today. In our earnest and sincere motivativation to protect ourselves from further threats from the Islamic terrorists, some of our political leaders have decided that the "end does justify the means" in the war on terrorism. The use of torture and the sacrifice of certain civil liberties are considered by some to be proper sacrifices in order to protect the security of America. To others, our basic principles as a people and a free society are too valuable to sacrifice and become a unnecessary measure in our strategy to protect and defend ourselves.
This week there was an interesting discussion on the The OReilley Factor show on Fox News between OReilly and a constitutional law professor. The issue was the use of torture against terrorists to interrogate them to obtain vital information. Torture, which is lately been called enhanced interrogation techniques, is viewed by some as a necessary means to achieve a desireable end. The argument used is always the same, which often makes me laugh if it was not so important. It goes something like this: So we have a very important terrorist who has critical information which could save the lives of hundreds of Americans, but the terrorist refuses to talk. Are you telling me that you are willing to let hundreds of Americans be killed rather than use whatever measures are required in order to make the terrorist talk? It is one of those statements or questions which is designed to make you look strong and patriotic or weak and anti-American! It will continue to be used in this sad debate to justify the use of torture and the compromise of other civil liberties in order to supposedly save and protect America lives. OReilly of course took the "John Wayne" approach in the debate declaring that nothing would stand in his way of protecting his fellow citizens from the terrorist threat. The professor, who was a constitutional law expert, acknowledged the concerns but took the position that our constitution and principles as a nation were not bargining chips in our efforts to protect ourselves.
Everytime I hear this same debate I am again reminded of the famous President Roosevelt comment at the beginning of World War II right after the attack on Pearl Harbor: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"! Since the attack of September 11th, there has been a continuous trend of building fear in this country amongst our citizens by the Bush Administration. Let us never forget September 11th, but let us never allow September 11th to be used as the rationale by some to change who we are and what we stand for as Americans. The end never justifies the means. Let us not let some falsely use patriotism as an excuse to change the character of this great country. We as a people have faced and survived many experiences in our history as a nation. I have no doubt that the same national character which existed then will continue to be our main strength to combat this newest threat to our nation.

"Earmarks, Pork, Whatever..."
Did you see the recent Congressional legislation regarding the "earmarks" or pork as we used to call it? Truly unbelievable how our U.S. tax money is spent. This money is not spent for the benefit of the nation; it is provided to the districts of individual Congressmen and women who use it in their own voting districts as payback for voter support. Earmarks or pork, is defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), as funds provided by the Congress for projects or programs where the Congressional direction (in bill or report language) circumvents the merit-based or competitive allocation process, or specifies the location or recipient, or otherwise curtails the ability of the Executive Branch to properly manage funds. Congress includes earmarks in appropriation bills - the annual spending bills that Congress enacts to allocate discretionary spending - and also in authorization bills.
On January 3, 2007 President Bush rightfully called on Congress to cut the number and cost of earmarks by at least half. To establish a benchmark for accurately measuring the President's goal, OMB requested agencies provide data on the earmarks for FY 2005. The FY 2005 earmarks database for appropriations establishes this benchmark and is consistent with the Administration's effort to bring greater transparency to how taxpayers' money is spent. Yes, despite all the current administration's poor decisions, I have to strongly agree with their efforts to better control this problem. Of course, this is business as usual in our democratic system. The members of congress are expected to bring federal tax dollars back home for "pet" projects that put people back to work, whether they actually need to or not.
Earmarks or pork in legislation have been a point of contention for years. Critics argue that the ability to earmark Federal funds should not be part of the legislative appropriations process. Tax money should be applied by federal agencies according to objective findings of need and carefully constructed requests rather than being earmarked arbitrarily by elected officials. Supporters of earmarks however, feel that elected officials are better able to prioritize funding needs in their own districts and states and that it is more democratic for these officials to make discreet funding decisions than unelected representatives of the federal government. However, many critics counter that elected representatives have too much of a vested interest in their own districts and do not have the Nation's interests as a whole in mind when making these decisions with taxpayer money.
Recently, Congress's year-end budget passed in December 2007 contains almost 9,000 earmarks. Almost 2,700 of them representing $13.2 billion have been identified as "Pork Projects". In the past, there were 13,997 "Pork Projects" for a total of $27.3 billion in 2005, and 9,963 projects for a total of $29 billion in 2006.
Will this maddness ever end? Will there ever be a corporate way of thinking, where we all consider the needs of the country over self interest in our districts? I really doubt it. It is shameful. However, the self interests of the members of congress combined with the overwhelming interests of Washington lobbyists is just to much to overcome.
There is no Santa Claus in the politics of Washington; even though Presidential candidate Ron Paul appears to bring some new thoughts to the process.

IN ALAN'S OPINION....
"RELIGION AND POLITICS: A BAD MIXTURE!"
As the political campaigns for President start to roll this year and into next year, there seems to be a continued interest by many candidates to use their religious beliefs more and more as part of their campaign rhetoric. I guess it is a great way to supposedly show the public how certain candidates are of excellent character and moral standards. My opinion is that we should beware of any politician who wears his or her religion on his or her sleeve. As the bible says " beware of false prophets". This is not to say that you shoud be ashamed of your religious beliefs--it simply means do not force your belief system or values on me. Do not use God as a political weapon to serve your own agenda. It has happened many times in the past and the current "war on terrorism" is another event which we must be careful not to turn it into a "war between civilizations".
Religion is a very strong and influential force in the life of people. However, religious faith is also a very sensitive issue in the lives of people. There are two old sayings which merit mention here. The first: talk about anything but religion and politics if you don't want to offend someone. The second: the world has seen more death and misery in the name of religion than for any other reason.
Todays world is populated by many different religions. The two most predominate faiths are Christianity (2.1 billion people) and Islam (1.5 billion people). Christianity is often associated with the western world while Islam has become synonymous with the eastern world. Religion, in the hands of mankind, may be used for good and also for evil purposes. Religion may be used to manipulate and control populations. Religion may be used to unite or it may be used to divide. Religion not only defines an individuals personal beliefs but may also define an entire society. Simply look at Northern Ireland for an example. Better yet, the current civil strife between religious factions in Iraq. And let us not forget The Crusades during the Middle Ages. Politics and religion are a dangerous combination. When religion is used for political purposes, it will more often divide people rather than unite them. Politics and religion do not mix well; and political and religious leaders should remember it.
With the attacks of September 11th in this country, the "war on terrorism" was initiated and will continue in an effort to make the world safer. It is a just effort which most nations understand. The current enemy are not Irish, German or Hispanic individuals--they are Arabs. Just like most Hispanics are Catholic, so most Arabs are Islamic in religious faith. However, this is not a religious war and we must be extremely careful not to create the perception that it is! The key word is "perception". We are continuously characterizing the terrorists as Islamic extremists. Arab is a nationality not a religion. Islam is a religion and not a race. Arab terrorists are not necessarily Islamic terrorists. The fact is simply that they are terrorists, who happen to be Arabs, who happen to be Islamic. So let us focus on fighting the terrorists. Do we care if the terrorists are Islam, Christian or Buddhists? No--we only care that they are terrorists! Just as the Crusades misused Christianity for political and economic purposes so are the Arab terrorists misusing Islam for their political purposes. The terrorists want to destroy us because of our poltical and economic way of life; not because of our religious faith.
The terrorists would like nothing better than to turn their efforts into a religious world war pitting Christianity against Islam. It will only happen if we are dumb enough to let it happen!
Let's wakeup America and at least think about it!

IN KEVIN'S OPINION....
Iraq Report - Fact or Fantasy?
This week Iraq Ambassador Crocker and U.S. Army General Petreaus will brief the Congress and thus, the nation, about where things stand in Iraq. The biggest question is whether or not their reporting will be fact or pure fantasy. I am afraid that this critical report to the American people will be loaded with false hope and misrepresented facts about how much progress has been made to date.
The report has basically been leaked to the press by both individuals and the White House. We will be told that we have made "significant" progress on the ground from a military standpoint since the date of the surge; that the training of the Iraqi military is now showing steady improvement; that economically there is much room for improvement; and politically there is significant work to be accomplished. Both Crocker and Petreaus will tell the country that we should not abandon all "hope" for Iraq and that our current strategy should continue. This is exactly what Bush wants to hear so that he can push forward for the remaining 15 months of his administration. It is all about his legacy now. The entire report to the country has been orchestrated by the Bush administration - - this is what they wanted!
Don't be misled by the new barrage of Republican commercials on TV that tell you that it is wrong to leave Iraq at this time as it would betray the sacrifice of the men and women who have been killed or injured. All these commercials are designed to stir your emotions and convince you that we cannot leave without "victory". The big issue is that no one in the Bush administration will specifically define actually what "victory" means. My question is how many more men and women "volunteers" will have to be sacrificed for this "victory"? How about 50 or 60 per month for the next 10 years or so. I am not great at math but in human life that would be an estimated 7,200 Americans. Are you willing to have your son or daughter be amongst that group?
So, between running errands this week and going to the ball games, take a moment to review the "report on Iraq" and think about the future for America.

A local news cast showed Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who has often addressed lawmakers about his love for animals, shaking with emotion during a forceful condemnation of dogfighting. The target of this anger is one of the NFL’s star quarterbacks Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons. This elder Vick’s problems now out distance those of his younger brother Marcus, who was dismissed from the Virginia Tech football program a couple years ago. Vick was indicted with three others by a federal grand jury in Virginia. Vick, Purnell A. Peace, Quanis L. Phillips and Tony Taylor are accused of staging often-fatal dogfights since at least 2002 through their Bad Newz Kennels on Vick's property in Surry County, Va. The four also are charged with transporting dogs across state lines for fights. Conviction on the "Travel Act" laws carries a maximum prison term of five years and a $250,000 fine. Conviction on conducting an animal-fighting venture can be punished by either a one-year sentence, a $100,000 fine or both.
The elder senator Byrd exclaimed "hundreds of thousands -- if not millions -- of dollars are often at stake in the breeding, the training and the selling of fighting dogs. How inhuman, how dastardly!" shouted the senator. "The training of these poor creatures to turn themselves into fighting machines is simply barbaric." Senate criticism increased Friday when Sen. John Kerry said he had sent a letter to the NFL commissioner calling for Vick's immediate suspension. The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee also said he planned to introduce new anti-dogfighting legislation. Additionally, more than 50 animal rights protesters gathered Friday outside NFL headquarters in New York, where People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals also demanded Vick's suspension. Further, The Humane Society of the United States also expressed their outrage over the entire matter. The African-American community has also spoken out strongly against Vick, who is an African-American athlete. In fact, it is refreshing to see the Reverand Al Sharpton strongly condem the activity by Vick. Thus far, Jessie Jackson seems to be keeping his distance from the fray. However, this is not surprising.
Vick and his “dog fighting friends” are barbarians of the worst sort. They deserve nothing less than the full force of the justice system. Vick needs to be looked at like any other criminal; not as a star athlete. In fact, his star has been fading for some time since he has not been able to successfully guide his team through the NFL playoffs. I am sure there are Falcon fans who cannot wait to see Vick totally self destruct; a task which he clearly looks like he is willing and able to accomplish.
Vick like many star athletes today are over paid entertainers, who do not know how to handle the fame and skills that they possess. The NFL commissioner should act strongly on this matter given the fact that the evidence is so strong. The NFL must clean up their house as a business and social institution. Vick’s days in Atlanta are numbered. He has turned his once admiring fan base into a bunch of critical schptics. He is a disgrace to his former university – Virginia Tech. He has experienced life at the top; now I cannot wait to see how he handles life at the bottom. Without football, this guy is nothing. Mr. Vick, I only wish you the very worst for what you have done. I am only afraid that the justice system will be too lenient on you and your friends in this matter.

"ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION OUT OF CONTROL!"
President Bush this week visited the U.S. Senate chambers in a last ditch effort to convince fellow Republican members to support the already disapproved comprehensive immigration reform bill. In return, President Bush promised billions of dollars to secure the border between Mexico and the United States. The previously defeated bill, which would essentially provide amnesty for the estimated 12 million illegal aliens already living in this country, may come up for another vote next week in the desperate hope to pass it into law. Most conservatives have opposed it's passage on the grounds of granting amnesty to illegals and many other weaknesses to strengthen our borders as well as preclude further illegal immigration. President Bush as well as many leading Democrats support the legislation.
For the President to offer billions of dollars to strengthen the border as enticement for legislators to vote for the bill is insane. Whether the bill passes or fails has nothing to do with the necessity of enforcing our border security and our immigration laws. It is a matter of national security which has been ignored for too many years. Hopefully, those in opposition will not allow their principles to be compromised and again insure the defeat of this legislation. It is bad law, bad for the country and bad for every American citizen.
Time for debate and thinking has past; it is now time for action--enforce the border and enforce our laws! We do not need any new laws to deal with the problem. We simply need to enforce our existing laws. To do otherwise will be the beginning of the destruction of our culture and national identity. It will be given away by misguided and foolish politicians, who sometimes seem more interested in pandering to special interest groups and major business lobbyists than being concerned with what is best for America.
As the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words", here are several taken at a protest by enrolled students (legal and illegal) at the Montebello High School in California. Take a good look and then ask yourself if illegal immigration is out of control? Then ask yourself why? And finally demand that our government leaders do something about it or start looking for another job!

All Americans need to listen up…YOU ARE LOSING YOUR COUNTRY! There are two wars going on for
Americans continue to send a message to
Even though Pentagon officials are not in a panic stage over recruiting, they cannot help but to look ahead to what may possibly occur in the future. How does a military involved in major conflicts continue to recruit new blood for a wounded patient who is in critical condition?
In a desperate attempt to recruit volunteers, the Army has increased cash incentives. Signing bonuses are up from $8,000 to $10,000. College scholarships have been raised from $50,000 to $70,000. Despite these lucrative incentives, which will have to continue, young men and women are shying away from military service. In fact, a major factor is the attitude of their parents and guardians. These same people who voted against the war strategy in November 2006 are now significantly affecting the enlistment rates. This type of action is how the “average Joe American” gets their “say” in the politics of the country. Speak out
The military remains optimistic but with some caution. They will continue to sell the concept of “duty, honor, and country.” I don’t have a problem with that theme except that it is for a losing strategy in
There was a recent article in my home town newspaper which told the story about some angry parents who were protesting the fact that military recruiters wanted to come on high school campuses just to discuss the benefits of a military career with high school seniors. The military recruiters simply wanted to educate the young adults about what they had to offer in terms of skill training just like a college fair does each year. These specific parents didn’t have a problem with colleges coming to spread their news but protested the military message. It is very interesting how these same parents would probably place a “yellow support ribbon” on their car but have a problem when the military simply wants to say “hello” to their child. Military recruiters have a right to go to high schools and to present their message. That message should be truthful and candid. Our military has a proud tradition and does offer great training and skills. More than anything, it builds confidence and respect for the country. I think all young Americans should participate in some form of mandatory military or social service of for at least 2 years without exception.
It is time that Americans wake up before it is too late to keep this country great. Don’t get so self-absorbed in your life that you don’t see the two guerillas in the room. The war on terrorism and the war on immigration are changing the nation’s landscape. You need to make a difference now before it is too late.
